The most important part of the gridding process is that you, the creator, are centered within your body. Crystal gridding is a powerful exercise in trusting your intuition, as it will lead you, not your logical mind. In order to access your intuition you must be grounded in yourself. Take a few moments to sit quietly, with your eyes closed, and focus on your breath. Clear your mind and energetic field of any frequencies you may have picked up over the day and return back to your core. Focus on each inhale and each exhale, feeling your ribs fill up with air and deflate with ease. Spend about five minutes here before starting to grid.

What do you want to call in? Crystals are energetic beings, each carry certain vibrations, which attract similar vibrations. Through creating a crystal grid, we create a powerhouse of frequencies all working together to bring in a certain energy to the space. Crystal grids can attract love, protection, guidance, or any astrological energy such as the qualities of Leo or Scorpio. Each grid you create will have a different purpose and intent. Decide what energy you want more of in your life and then declare to the Universe your intent. This declaration can be as simple as “I am creating this crystal grid to call in the energy of Scorpio into my space.” Energy likes to be invited in, this simple statement will create an opening for the vibrations to enter your space. Your intention is what creates the container for the energy. The incoming frequencies will also help guide you over the next steps.

The center of your grid is the most important crystal. It is what grounds the entire grid and anchors the energy. The most common center pieces for a grid are generators or spheres. generators have six facets which come to a point at the top and a flat bottom. These crystals pull in energy from the cosmos and spread it out evenly through the bottom to the rest of the grid. Generators are great when grounding is needed as they work very well to structure the energy coming into the space. Spheres also serve as wonderful centerpieces. They distribute the energy more randomly throughout the room. Spheres work well if your intention is to release or project energy outward. Spheres also help when working with less structured energy. As a rule of thumb, generators align with the qualities of Fire and Earth. This includes vibrations of protection, motivation, courage, grounding, abundance, and our Fire and Earth zodiac signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn). Spheres align with Water and Air elements and their qualities of love, release, communication, healing, magic, and our Water and Air zodiac signs (Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Pisces).

There is no right or wrong amount of crystals. You can create a very powerful grid with just five crystals. Shape and size doesn’t matter either for these pieces, although you can use certain shapes to fine tune the grid. Most grids are created with tumbled stones, but you can use generators, spheres and pyramids if you like. Choose crystals that hold the vibrations of the qualities which match your intention. For instance, rose quartz carries the frequency of unconditional love. If you want to call this into your life then choose this crystal as part of your grid. Citrine carries the frequency of abundance. Quartz calls in positive vibrations and will amplify all of the other crystals in the grid. Smokey Quartz will clear away negativity. Black stones, such as onyx or black tourmaline align vibrationally with protection. Our blue stones, such as aquamarine, blue topaz or angelite align with communication. Labradorite is a magical stone and will call in your innate psychic abilities. Have it present when you are in need of guidance, as it will enhance your intuition. Amethyst is also a wonderful stone in a crystal grid. It will give you access to your deepest visions and help clarify your dreams. These are just general suggestions, feel free to be as creative as you like with your choices. After you’ve chosen your crystals, cleanse them with palo santo or sage by wafting the smoke over them before you begin to lay them out.

After you’ve chosen some crystals, decide what shape you’d like to build. Crystal grids come in a variety of configurations which all attract different qualities. This process is where the elements come in to help. Water grids are a circular shape. Their energy will bring healing and release. Earth grids have more structure and contain shapes, like squares or stars. These grid help call in protection and boundaries. Fire grids feel and look like a star burst. They align us with our more dynamic energies, like courage and leadership. Air grids contain a spiral and align us with softer energies like love and peace. Whatever shape you choose be flexible with it. You do not need to create a perfect grid, and in fact over organizing your grid with take the magic out of it.

Once you’ve chosen a shape, place your center piece. Then mark the four directions, North, South, East and West. You may end up moving these pieces as you build your grid (especially if you are creating a spiral), but have them marked for now.
