Jupiter Retrograde in Taurus: Nourishing Beliefs
All About Jupiter
Humans have known about Jupiter, the “gas giant” since ancient times, though the first official insights on the planet were reported in the 1600s by Galileo. Upon viewing Jupiter by telescope, he was surprised to discover what he initially believed were stars, but soon realized were four Moons orbiting Jupiter.
We now know Jupiter to have a whopping 80 Moons and, like Saturn and Uranus, rings as well. Jupiter’s rings, though, are extremely faint and made of dust particles rather than ice. Jupiter is also the largest planet in our solar system (the Sun, a luminary, being the largest of all) with its “giant red spot” alone being larger than the entirety of Earth.
As ever, planets’ physical properties are used to inform their spiritual and psychological properties in astrology. We relate Jupiter, also called the great benefic, to abundance and growth due to its extreme size, and its faint rings might encourage us to remember the importance of boundaries in our life- even (and especially) when we’re looking to expand.
While Jupiter transits are overarchingly looked forward to and known as beneficial periods, it’s important to remember that too much of a good thing is still too much. We might remember the massive storms that have been raging on Jupiter for hundreds of years as a reminder that a magnanimous demeanor likely still comes with its own internal battles.
What’s that saying, “everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle you know nothing about?” They’re wise words and might be one of Jupiter’s own philosophies, too.
Jupiter Retrograde in Taurus
Jupiter only entered Taurus in May of 2023, so we’re still very much adjusting to its energy. Unlike Jupiter in Aries, Jupiter is now co-present with Uranus, and that’s going to be one of the biggest stories of its time in the sign. In the Spring of 2024, Jupiter will connect with Uranus and then Venus before departing Taurus for Gemini. In preparation for those exciting transits, we’re now tasked with getting clear about our foundational beliefs.
This retrograde is interesting because it’s occurring less than 24 hours after Venus stations direct. This seems to signal that while our values have undergone their own underworld transformation, it’s now time for our beliefs to catch up. In this sense, our newfound values are informing our foundational beliefs, and that’s what Jupiter’s retrograde journey is meant to right.
Rather than simply going along with the current groupthink (Jupiter) we’re all being tasked with a much more personal journey. Integrating how your values changed during Venus Retrograde will be a critical component of cementing Jupiter retrograde’s lessons.
Finally, the Jupiter retrograde chart can be a helpful tool in predicting what themes might come up over the coming months. Curiously, Jupiter will station retrograde in conjunction with the Moon in Taurus, and the Moon will be closely square Venus. The Moon is all about how we nurture ourselves/others and feel safe, so those ideas will be of critical importance with this transit. It’s not only about how we’re looking to grow, but how that growth is able to feed us, perhaps in both a literal and metaphorical way.
Pay close attention to what you’re consuming from September through the end of the year, especially related to the Venusian relationships that surround you. Jupiter retrograde in Taurus wants us all focused on relationships and how they make us feel.
Jupiter stations retrograde on September 4th at 15° Taurus, and will station direct again on December 30th at 5° Taurus. Those with personal planets between 3° and 17° of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) are likely to feel this transit personally.
General Tips for Jupiter Retrograde
- Jupiter is all about expansion and living the good life. Rather than critical thinking here, it’s about enjoying the felt experience. Ponder what things seem to always arrive as an easy “yes” and vow to prioritize them. And conversely, remember where saying yes without discernment has gotten you into trouble in the past. Be radically honest with yourself about the ways you might overdo it to your own detriment.
- Jupitarian people are often comedians, and in 2023, it feels like we could all use something to laugh about! Think back to the last time you laughed so hard you cried, and if you can’t remember, reach out to your funniest friend or queue up your favorite comedy movie for an extra boost of serotonin.
- Jupiter in Taurus specifically relates to physical manifestations. A great crystal to work with during this time is Smoky Citrine, as it both calls in the creative desires of a Venus ruled Jupiter, and retrieves information we might’ve forgotten about, ala the retrograde portion of the current energy.
